Artist Talk: Scott Ross Ceramic

Scott Ross Ceramic: The Ephemeral Connections Between The Spaces We Occupy, Both Inside and Out.

“We set this house on fire forgetting that we live within.”

On Tuesday, February 11, 2020, my fellow classmates and I went to the Ceramic Room at Kadema Hall to hear and see an art experience from Scott Ross. When we first arrived to the room, I was intrigued by the use of other students helping Scott Ross begin his processes to his artwork. For example, there were two students in front of me creating and pounding clay as part of the first step to Scott Ross's process to his ceramic making.

Moreover, Ross then asked all of us the kinds of artists and genres we were learning in class. To begin with, we discussed about Modern artists. One student talked about Jackson Pollock, Abstract Expressionism, Marth Rothko's artwork. In discussing Jackson Pollock, Ross also emphasized his interest in Abstract Expressionism, comparing his work to more of an Abstract form.

Scott Ross's interest also stemmed from Brutalism, an architectural style that forms abstract block-like structures.
The Artist statement revolves around the physical space we occupy and the one that is constructed within in. He interprets the levels of humanity and architecture and the relations between these two as the "sacred and mundane". Furthermore, his interest mainly involves the in between the spaces we occupy we view in body, mind and in place.
